It's five o'clock and the house is bright
The time is 5 o'clock, and the house is well-lit.
But we can't survive in artificial light
Despite the artificial light, we can't endure or thrive in this environment.
So you walk away
You choose to leave.
And I walk away this time
I also choose to depart this time.
You know how it always goes with that stuff
There's a familiar pattern with substances; one is too much, and even a hundred is insufficient.
One's too many and
Referencing the difficulty of moderation and control.
A hundreds not enough
The struggle with addiction or dependency.
So you walk away
You decide to leave once again.
And I walk away this time
I also choose to leave this time.
And this cold, It makes you feel your age
The cold weather accentuates feelings of age and vulnerability.
Those old familiar shakes
Referring to the tremors or shivers associated with cold and perhaps metaphorically to the effects of age.
But no reminders of warmer days
Despite feeling the effects of age, there are no reminders of warmer, better days.
It doesn't work that way
Contrasting the expectation of reminiscing with the reality of the present.
The sun is gone
The sun has set suddenly, akin to a bomb explosion.
It dropped like an atom bomb
The daylight has significantly reduced, and it won't last long.
It won't shine shorter
Emphasizing the brevity of sunlight during this time.
Remember though
Remember, even in the difficulty (salt and snow), time moves forward.
As you trudge through the salt and snow
Despite hardships, each passing day becomes longer as winter nears its end.
Each day gets longer now
Make plans for future escapes or pleasant times.
Plan these getaways
Planning for warmer days with hopes for shared experiences.
For the warmer days
Despite planning, these anticipated moments won't materialize between "you and me."
Just you and me
There's a lack of optimism about your return or change of heart.
They'll never come to be
It's the thought or intention that counts, even if actions don't follow.
You'll never come around
Expressing disappointment or resignation about the absence of your presence.
But it's the thought that counts
Still valuing the consideration, even if it doesn't result in reunion.
And we won't hang again
We won't meet again.
But we did back then
Reflecting on past times spent together.
I diagnose and drink away this curse
Describing attempts to understand and cope with a personal issue (curse) by self-medicating.
Prescriptions gone still dying of thirst
Despite the absence of medication, the problem persists, likened to still being thirsty despite the prescription being gone.
So I walk away
I choose to leave once again due to the situation.

Expressing a plea not to depart this time.

A heartfelt request to avoid leaving.
