There has never been a morally corrupt character in movies who could deceive and cheat as effectively as Honest Sam.

Who could lie and cheat like Honest Sam.

Honest Sam is exceptionally skilled at lying and cheating.

In the card room down at Louie's

At Louie's card room, Honest Sam takes money from the hardworking individuals who frequent the place.

He takes the pay from the working man.

He exploits and takes the wages of the working class in the card room at Louie's.


Lay your cards upon the table,

Participants should reveal their cards openly on the table.

And everybody show their hand.

Everyone present must disclose their cards for inspection.

Foiled again you sad-eyed losers,

Despite efforts, those with sad expressions lose once again, frustrated by Honest Sam's cunning.

Repeated mention of the losers being foiled once more by Honest Sam.


Once, there came a simple stranger.

A stranger arrives, and a confrontation arises when Sam is caught cheating. Words are exchanged.

He caught Sam cheatin' and words was said.

Sam is caught cheating during the card game, leading to a verbal altercation.

Sam just winked at Joe the Strangler,

Sam responds with a wink when confronted by Joe the Strangler after being caught cheating.

Joe, he shot that stranger dead.

As a result of the confrontation, Joe the Strangler shoots and kills the stranger.

Repetition of the theme where participants are urged to lay their cards on the table for transparency.

And everybody show their hand.

Reiteration of the expectation for everyone to reveal their hands during the card game.

Now Honest Sam lives in a mansion,

Honest Sam now lives a luxurious life in a mansion.

And he sails his ships out on the sea.

He has become prosperous enough to own ships that sail on the sea.

And if the Devil's paid his ransom,

Speculation that if the Devil demanded payment, Honest Sam could afford the ransom for himself and others.

Well I guess he'd pay for you and me.

It is suggested that Honest Sam could potentially pay the Devil's ransom for others, including the speaker.
