Before We Know
Embracing Change: A Reflection on Life's Fleeting MomentsLyrics
I keep trying not to care about the things I cannot change
I struggle to avoid caring about things beyond my control
But it remains my resolution every year
This remains my annual resolution
And though I'm tired of being angry
Despite fatigue from anger, I continue to express myself loudly
I'm still shouting myself hoarse
My passionate expression hinders my ability to hear
Which of course makes it difficult to hear
Awareness of time passing represented by ticks, tocks, and chimes
All the ticks and all the tocks
Reflection on the fleeting nature of the world
From all the hands on all the clocks
A realization that the future will become the past swiftly
And all the chimes on all the bells
The hope for a different year, seeking wisdom to accept
From all the time that always tells me
Letting go of uncontrollable aspects and finding stillness
That the world is fading fast
Reflection on the beauty and peculiarity of life
And the future will be past
Acknowledgment of the transient nature of time
Before we know
The inevitability of change occurring before our awareness
Maybe this year will be different and I'll be wise enough to know
Hope for a wiser approach, letting go of unchangeable things
And just let go of all the things I cannot change
Finding a way to sit still and appreciate the present
And I'll finally find a way to just sit still
Passing time while being mindful of what's beautiful and strange
And pass the time
Contemplation of the transient nature of seasons and life
Reminded of what's lovely and strange
Recognition of the loveliness in simple things
Like a January thaw
Reference to the beauty of a January thaw
Or that woodpeck I saw
Appreciation for observing a woodpecker
Or the buds bursting from trees
Noticing the buds on trees, anticipating their transformation
Which soon will turn to leaves
Awareness of the cyclical nature of life and seasons
Until the time again next fall
Anticipation of the falling leaves in the next fall
When the trees will drop them all
The inevitability of change occurring before our awareness
Before we know
I'll be gone before I know it
Recognition of life's brevity and the swift passing of time
Life it passes in a flash
Acknowledgment of life's transience and the return to nature
Back to ash our bodies wash out to the sea
The inevitability of our bodies returning to ashes and the sea
But before all of that happens
Prioritizing self-improvement before the inevitable end
I resolve to do my best
A commitment to addressing personal flaws and making changes
To address just what could use some change in me
Seeking a balance between preaching and prayer
Less preaching and more prayer
Emphasizing the need for tenderness and care
More tenderness and care
Advocating for more love and less judgment
Less judgement and more love
Reducing worry and focusing on what truly matters
Less worry about stuff
Increasing attention to cherished aspects of life
More attention to what's dear
Acknowledging the impermanence of everything
Because it all will disappear
The importance of appreciating what is dear before it disappears
Before we know
The inevitability of everything fading away before our awareness
