Contemplating the survival through a challenging period, possibly a war.

To spill the words from my tongue?

Expressing the desire to articulate thoughts and emotions despite adversity.

Or would we both end up dead?

Raising the question of potential tragic outcomes for both characters.

Was it worse to bid farewell,

Weighing the emotional impact of bidding farewell versus witnessing a downfall.

Than to watch him fall?

Comparing the difficulty of saying goodbye to witnessing someone's decline.

Was his life worth ten others, ten other,

Questioning the value of the protagonist's life in comparison to others.

Killed with merciless gale?

Reflecting on the brutality of death, possibly in a violent manner.

We'd learn to paint the sands red

Anticipating a transformation or adaptation to a harsh environment.

Would my hand be steady now,

Considering the storyteller's readiness and resolve for a difficult task.

To commit this awful task?

Doubting whether the storyteller can carry out a challenging responsibility.

Spew forward heated shells,

Imagining the discharge of powerful and destructive ammunition.

From the trigger in my grasp?

Questioning the storyteller's capability to wield a weapon and take action.

We'd learn to paint the sands red

Reiteration of the anticipation of adapting to a violent and challenging situation.
