Reflecting on spending significant time in isolation.

Speculating on the potential lack of remembrance after one is gone.

But I ain't never been nobody's boss but my own

Stating independence from being a subordinate or having authority over others.

And I hope that you can say the same

Expressing a hope that others have also maintained their autonomy.

And I feel just like everyone around

Feeling a sense of commonality with those around, suggesting shared experiences.

Describing a personal inclination to express thoughts of change through song.

But if we was all to live another mile uptown

Suggesting a need for societal change and improvement.

I think we'd like to get it changed a whole lot sooner

Expressing a desire for prompt societal change rather than delayed progress.
