And they tortured the timber and stripped all the land

Well, they dug for their coal till the land was forsaken

Continued coal mining leading to the abandonment of the land.

Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man

Recording destruction as human progress.


When I die let my ashes float down the Green River

Expressing a wish for ashes to float down the Green River upon death.

Let my soul roll on up to the Rochester dam

Desire for the soul to reach the Rochester dam and Paradise.

I'll be halfway to Heaven with Paradise waitin'

Anticipating being halfway to Heaven with Paradise nearby.

Just five miles away from wherever I am
