Lyrics

When I was a little barefooted boy

Reflecting on childhood as a young boy

Back in the hills of eastern Kentucky

Living in the rural area of eastern Kentucky

I was lazy and about half crazy

Being somewhat lazy and somewhat eccentric

Catfish didn't bite in the daytime

Fishing wasn't productive during the day

And little boys weren't allowed

Children were restricted from being out after dark

Out after dark

Curfew for children

But we had a few thrills and one

Had few exciting experiences, one of which involved the grocery truck

Of them was the grocery truck

The truck delivering groceries

Well the grocery truck was a little ole truck

Small delivery truck with its name on the door

With the name painted on the door

In winter, it often got stuck while delivering food

In the winter time it always got stuck

Supplying beans and greens to the impoverished

Bringin' beans and greens to the poor

Using mules to help free the stuck truck

We'd go get the mules and we'd pull it out

Neighbors gathered when the truck got stuck

And the neighbors would come to the show

Frustration and excitement were expressed during the rescue

We'd cuss them mules and holler

Expressing frustration and shouting during the rescue

And shout cause the treasure

The food delivery was highly valued

On board was gold

Food was considered as valuable as gold

And the grocery truck is a comin'

Anticipation of the grocery truck's arrival

It's about a half a mile away

Excitement as the truck nears the area

Just when we were down on our luck

Feeling fortunate when the family was struggling

Here comes the grocery truck

Relief at the sight of the grocery truck

Now the grocery truck with the store

Grocery truck supplied the household goods

Bought stuff bologney and crackers and cheese

Items purchased from the store on the truck

Sometimes a new pair of pants with cuffs

Sometimes, the truck had clothing or candies for sale

Or candy to fill our needs

Fulfilling desires with available items

If I counted the thrills of my life today

Reflecting on the joy and excitement brought by the truck

As I cater to fancy and whim

Comparing current life's excitement to the past, finding it lacking

None would compare to the grocery truck

Truck deliveries felt like a weekly Christmas celebration

It was Christmas ev'ry Friday back then

Emphasizing the immense joy derived from the truck's deliveries

Well the grocery truck was a sign of success

Considering the truck as a symbol of prosperity

We were economical giants

Feeling like economic successes due to the truck's arrival

My mother would laugh sometimes

Humorous situation when father was intoxicated

Till she cried

Mother's response to the situation - laughing and crying

Cause daddy was high on a pint

Father's drunken state

Oh the grocery truck never comes anymore

Expressing nostalgia for the past when the truck used to come regularly

As it did in the way back when

Comparison between past regular deliveries and the present

Its supermarkets and one stop stores

Shift towards modern supermarkets and fast food joints

And hamburger shops again

Change in consumer habits and businesses

Daddy'd just say charge it to me

Father allowing charges for groceries, reflecting changing times

Whoa charge it to me

Father's willingness to cover the expenses despite changes in payment methods
