Nothing to You
Shadows of the Past: Addie Costain's Poetic ReflectionLyrics
I was talking with your mother
I had a conversation with your mother
This can't be good for your health
This situation is detrimental to your well-being
To take your problems out on others
Expressing disapproval of dealing with personal issues by hurting others
To only care about yourself
Criticizing self-centered behavior, lacking concern for others
And we were sitting in the kitchen
A setting in the kitchen, possibly symbolizing a place of intimacy
Smoke was filling up my lungs
Smoke represents negativity, possibly from hurtful words
From all the fires that your words lit
Words spoken caused emotional fires
Didn't we used to have fun?
Nostalgia for past enjoyment, questioning the change in the relationship
You're a reminder of the face of someone I haven't met
Seeing traits of an unknown person in you
I hope it's someone better but I just don't know them yet
Hope for a better version of you, uncertainty about their existence
And when I'm with you I'm a shadow a darkened silhouette
Feeling overshadowed and diminished when with you
Who knew that I'm nothing to you?
Realization that one is insignificant to you
And you feel like a midnight alley
Comparing you to a dark, unwelcoming place
Vandalized with the words you say
Your words cause damage and defacement
The only thing you feel is fury
Expressing anger as the predominant emotion
The only thing I feel is pain
Feeling pain in response to the hurtful words
And every day I'm one step closer
Moving closer to a metaphorical edge, possibly considering self-harm
To jumping off the cliff you are
Describing your negative influence as a cliff
And landing in the deep blue water
Imagining a fall into deep, blue water as an escape
And swimming oh so far
Swimming away to a distant place
You're a reminder of the face of someone I haven't met
Reiteration of being reminded of an unfamiliar face
I hope it's someone better but I just don't know them yet
Hope for a better version of the person being referred to
And when I'm with you I'm a shadow a darkened silhouette
Continued feeling of being overshadowed when with you
Who knew that I'm nothing to you?
Reaffirmation of being insignificant to you
'Cause you're an empty shell
Describing you as a hollow, lifeless version of someone known before
Of someone I used to know
Questioning the difficulty of letting go when you're not emotionally present
So if you're not there
Expressing the emotional struggle of detachment
Why's it so hard to let go?
Questioning the challenge of moving on when you're absent
So one day I'll meet the face of somebody that is kind
Anticipation of meeting someone kind and positive
I'll return to someplace better a better state of mind
Hope for a return to a better mental state
And that day I'll be the sun and the shadow's left behind
Envisioning a day of personal growth, leaving negativity behind
I'll be new without you
Anticipation of self-renewal without your presence
