Lyrics

I was waltzin' with my darlin' at the cattleman's ball.

I was dancing with my sweetheart at the cattleman's ball.

Lost in the music and her charms.

Lost in the music and captivated by her charms.

I was glidin' around the dance floor, she felt so good in my arms.

Gracefully moving around the dance floor, she felt wonderful in my embrace.

When a tall dark stranger walked up, and cut in.

A mysterious stranger approached and interrupted our dance.

He said, excuse me sir, why don't you go have a seat.

He suggested I step aside, but I asserted my claim to the lady.

I said well listen' here pardner, this may sound kinda crude,

I explained to the stranger that the lady is dancing with me.

But the lady is dancin' with me.

Emphasizing my connection with the lady despite the stranger's interruption.

Now I paid for the supper, an' I bought the drinks,

I paid for the dinner and bought the drinks, feeling entitled to dance with her.

So I feel that I've got the right,

Asserting my perceived right to dance with the lady.

Now I'm sorry ole buddy, but you just better back off,

Warning the stranger to back off to avoid potential trouble.

Or there's liable to be trouble here tonight.

Expressing the seriousness of the situation if the stranger persists.

Now I can see that you're upset, 'cause it's always been a tradition,

Acknowledging the traditional practice of letting others cut in but defending my position.

To let a fine young gentleman cut in,

Highlighting the gentlemanly tradition while maintaining my protective stance.

But if you don't take your hands off my lady, pardner,

Threatening physical consequences if the stranger doesn't release the lady.

I'm gonna have to break your chin.

Warning of potential harm if the stranger persists in holding the lady.

Now, I've seen your kind before and I know,

Recognizing the stranger's intentions and being wary of his motives.

Exactly what's on your mind.

Insinuating that the stranger's actions may be fueled by personal issues.

Your woman probably left you, for someone else,

Suggesting that the stranger may be attempting to compensate for a past relationship failure.

So you thought you'd just take a run at mine.

Speculating that the stranger is pursuing my lady to fill a void left by his own partner.

Yeah, you though you'd be leavin' her later on,

Imagining the stranger's expectation of leaving with my lady later on.

That's right it's all part of the game.

Acknowledging that such interactions are part of the social dance 'game.'

Why don't you take my advice and on go back to the bar,

Advising the stranger to return to the bar peacefully and in one piece.

In one piece, the same way you came in.

Urging the stranger to retreat unharmed as he entered.

The stranger took off and I saw him tryin' with someone else.

The stranger left and attempted to dance with someone else.

An' my lady well, she scowled at me,

My lady disapproved of the situation, expressing her displeasure.

An' she said, you know I think that was very uncouth,

She criticized the stranger's behavior, citing a breach of chivalry.

And goes against all the rules of chivalry.

Despite her disapproval, she smiled at me and complimented my approach.

Then she smiled up at me, with those beautiful eyes,

Her smile and admiration for my style despite the earlier disturbance.

An' said, mister, you know I kinda like your style,

She appreciated my handling of the situation but raised a practical concern about the kids.

But do you think we should call up the sitter and check on the kids?

Suggesting a pause to check on the kids, but I playfully dismissed the idea.

I just grinned and said, naw let's just dance a while.

Choosing to continue dancing, disregarding the need to call the babysitter.
