Lyrics

They had a warrant out for me all over the country

There was a warrant issued for my arrest across the entire country.

And I was trying to beat the raps in Idaho

I was attempting to evade the charges in Idaho.

I was breaking into a schoolhouse Sunday morning without warning

I was unlawfully entering a schoolhouse on a Sunday morning without prior notice or permission.

When I saw the sheriff coming for me slow from down below

As I was committing this act, I noticed the sheriff slowly approaching me from a lower position.

His steel gray eyes were blazing when he saw me

The sheriff had intense and piercing gray eyes when he saw me.

His hand was on his gun when he rode up

He was prepared for action, with his hand on his firearm, as he rode up to confront me.

He said you killed that woman I know you shot her why'd you do it

The sheriff accused me of killing a woman and demanded an explanation for my actions.

I'm taking you to Austin then I'm gonna lock you up

He declared his intention to take me to Austin and incarcerate me.

Well he tied me with a plow line the next morning

The following morning, the sheriff restrained me using a plow line.

And he had me deep in Texas the next day

He transported me to Texas, arriving the next day.

A crazy screaming lynch mob waited in the streets of Austin

A frenzied and irrational mob awaited us in the streets of Austin.

But he put me in the jailhouse and he threw the key away

Instead of yielding to the mob, the sheriff confined me in the jail and disposed of the key.

A jury found me guilty three months later twelve evil men with murder in their eyes

I was declared guilty by a jury comprised of twelve malevolent individuals with a strong desire for vengeance.

They even took me out and said now show us where you killed her

They even took me outside to demand that I reveal the location where I purportedly committed the murder.

And that wicked judge said now I here by sentence you to die

The judge, displaying a malevolent disposition, pronounced a death sentence upon me.

But here I am far away from Austin prison my friend the jailer handed me a file

Despite being far from Austin prison, the jailer surreptitiously provided me with a file to aid in my escape.

Now all I want between me and there are a lot of friendly people

I now desire the company of many amicable individuals to stand between me and returning to that place.

And miles and miles and miles and miles and miles and miles and miles

There is a vast expanse of distance (both physical and metaphorical) separating me from Austin prison.
