Smokestack Serenade: A Journey Through Fading SummersLyrics
We went to the cape
We traveled to the cape.
The summer had passed
The season of summer had ended.
There were off-season rates
Lower prices were available due to it being the off-season.
The smokestack we adored
A chimney or industrial structure that held significance for us.
Sat and blew smoke
The smokestack emitted smoke continuously.
Like never before
The smoke emissions were more intense or consistent than before.
Up into the atmosphere
The smoke rose into the sky.
Where the sky is blue and clear
Describing the clear, blue sky in the upper atmosphere.
And every plane's a little stain
Every passing airplane left a trace or mark in the sky.
Our wipers wiped away the acid rain
The windshield wipers cleaned away the acidic rain.
The rain
Repetition emphasizing the rain falling.
Rain
Continued emphasis on the rain.
Rain, yeah, yeah, yeah
Emphatic repetition of the word "rain."
And when I came back it had wasted away
Upon returning, something significant had deteriorated or disappeared.
By it I mean most of the best part of day
The best part of the day had been wasted or lost.
I promised to quit if you promised to stay
An agreement to change if the other person stayed, but it wasn’t honored.
You packed up your shit my life remained the same
The other person left, and life remained unchanged.
The same
Reiteration that things remained the same.
