To ask ourselves
Encouraging self-reflection and examination of the aforementioned questions.
Like will we ever have enough
Pondering whether there will ever be satisfaction or if greed will persist.
Or will we just keep taking
Questioning the tendency to continuously take without restraint.
Where do we go from here
Contemplating the direction and choices for the future.
Where did all those tall trees
Expressing concern about the disappearance of nature, symbolized by tall trees.
Disappear to, I can’t see
Expressing difficulty in perceiving the reasons behind environmental changes.
Why we keep on killing
Questioning the persistent violence against those who support and sustain us.
The hands that feed us
Highlighting the paradox of harming those who provide for us.
We’ve got some pretty big questions
Reiterating the presence of significant, unanswered questions.
To ask ourselves
Asking whether our actions would make our children proud or ashamed.
Like would our kids be proud of us
Contemplating the impact of our actions on future generations.
Or would they be ashamed
Questioning the legacy and morality of current behaviors.
I walk down to the ocean
Describing a visit to the ocean as a symbolic act of paying respects.
To pay my respects
Acknowledging the losses and remaining elements of the natural world.
For the things she has lost
Reflecting on what the ocean has lost and retained.
And the things she has left
Connecting the act of walking to the ocean with a search for meaning.
I walk to the ocean to look for a sign
Expressing a desire for guidance or insight, looking for signs.
And I hope that the answers
Hoping that answers will come with time, using the metaphor of the tide.
Come back with the tide
Reiterating the existence of significant, unresolved questions.
So we’ve got some pretty big questions
