Lyrics

Here's the tale of ole John Courage:

Introduction to the character John Courage

He stood out from the crowd

John Courage stood out due to his distinctiveness

With all bark, no bite piss-drunk and loud

He appeared tough and loud but lacked action

As each ale went down his wisdom followed

As he drank, he became wiser (ironically due to alcohol)

And the liquid courage of John

His bravery surfaced due to alcohol

It started to show

His behavior started reflecting this newfound courage

"Back up, ole friend of mine

A warning to John not to cross a certain line

Don't cross that line"

-

"Back up, ole friend of mine

-

Don't cross that line"

-

Then I took to the corner

The narrator chose to drink alone for their own well-being and John's

To drink with myself

-

I found it better for me

-

And for John's health

-

Like the butt of a joke along came John

John became the subject of ridicule and acted recklessly

Then he asked for the time

-

And he reached for a smoke

-

"Back up, ole friend of mine

Repeated warning to John not to cross the line

Don't cross that line"

-

"Back up, ole friend of mine

-

Don't cross that line"

-

Well, he laughed at my request (Hey, hey)

A confrontation occurred where the narrator took action against John

And flicked some ash in my quarter cask

-

(Hey, hey)

-

Then we entered the danger zone (Hey, hey)

-

And I wondered if he was alone (Hey, hey)

-

I went straight to the dome (Hey, hey)

-

And dropped him like a stone (Hey, hey)

-

Straight to the dome (Hey, hey)

-

And dropped him like a stone (Hey, hey)

-

Yeah!

Expressing victory or accomplishment

Oh, such is the tale of ole John Courage

John disappeared after the confrontation, presumed to be gone

We hadn't seen or heard from him since then

-

When he was sent to oblivion

-

But old salts die hard

An assertion that old habits or characteristics persist

And he's no exception to the rule

-

Speak of the devil

John reappears, seeking more confrontation

He's come right back for more

-

I say, "Back up, ole friend of mine

A renewed warning to John to stop his aggressive behavior

Don't cross that line

-

Right now, you need to fucking stop!"
