Expressing deep remorse to an angry crowd.
But vengeance was theirs as they bellowed for justice

The crowd called for the death of the man who committed a sin against God.
I joined in the chant feeling so high and mighty
Feeling superior, joining the crowd in condemnation.
Pointing the finger from up on my throne
Accusing others while feeling self-righteous.
'Til I looked in his tears and I caught my reflection
Realizing one's own reflection in the tears of the accused, leading to self-reflection.
And I knew that I could not cast the first stone.
Recognizing the inability to judge or condemn.
Let the gavel fall slowly tho' truth's been revealed
Despite the truth being known, delaying judgment.
Sequester the jury for a moment to feel
Allowing the jury to empathize before making a decision.
And in the courts of compassion I hope we can appeal
Hoping for compassion in the judicial process.

Advocating for appealing to humanity's better nature.
I walked along on my soft streets of plenty
Living in comfort while acknowledging the suffering of others.
She walked the alleys of anguish and need
Recognizing someone else's hardship and contrasting it with personal comfort.
While clutching my greed I was struck by a vision
Realizing a potential fate similar to those in need, prompted by a vision.
But for the grace of God, that could be me.
Understanding that circumstances could easily change.
And we gather in chambers of lofty ideals
Gathering in discussions about high ideals.
Still debating the giving when handed the bill
Debating generosity when confronted with responsibility.
But in the congress of kindness I hope that we can yield
Hoping for generosity and compromise in decision-making.

Who do I lean to, who do I hear?
Questioning whose guidance to follow in times of moral uncertainty.
We are building our world with a fevered emotion
Constructing society amidst intense emotions.
While trying to keep it from coming apart
Struggling to maintain societal cohesion.
But as we reach for the dream can we still reach within us
Aspiring toward dreams while emphasizing the importance of internal values.
We won't have the hope if we don't have the heart.
Highlighting the necessity of compassion for hope to endure.
'Cause we've tossed in the gale of a moral decline
Amidst societal decline, facing moral challenges.
As we drink from the grail of society's wine
Indulging in societal pleasures while facing moral decay.
But at humanities table I hope we choose to dine
Opting for a hopeful, morally aligned path for humanity.
With the better angels of our nature.
Advocating for choosing the better aspects of human nature.
