There are many things in life
Expressing the complexity of life.
That I cannot understand
Acknowledging the existence of things beyond comprehension.
Yet the good Lord's blessed the labor
Recognizing the blessings received from God for hard work.
Of these two hard working hands
Highlighting the labor and effort put into work by the hands.
And when all my toil is over
Referring to the end of one's labor or life.
And I'm laid beneath the sod
Anticipating death and burial.
Then these hands of mine shall
Expressing a connection between the hands and God.
Touch the hands of God
Imagining a spiritual connection with God after death.
Many times these hands have failed Him but
Admitting past failures despite God's grace.
He's kept me by His grace
Gratitude for being sustained by God's grace despite shortcomings.
Even though sometimes in kindness He's
Reflecting on moments of discipline from God.
Applied the chastening rod
Reference to God's corrective measures.
But I'm going home tomorrow and I'll
Expressing the anticipation of going home (to heaven).
See Him face to face
Expectation of meeting God face to face in the afterlife.
Then these hands of mine will
Imagining a direct connection with God through the hands.
Touch the hands of God
Reiteration of the spiritual connection with God's hands.
There'll be a welcome there for me
Anticipation of a welcoming atmosphere in heaven.
Far beyond that crystal sea
Describing a heavenly scene beyond a crystal sea.
And I'll hold the hands that
Anticipating holding the hands that bear scars from Calvary.
Calvary's nails have scarred
Reference to the crucifixion and sacrifice of Jesus.
Then I'll enter through the gates
Imagining entry through heavenly gates.
Walk on streets the saints have trod
Walking on paths of those considered saints.
Then these hands of mine will
Reiterating the idea of direct contact with God through hands.
Touch the hands of God
Emphasizing the spiritual connection with God in the afterlife.
