Ray decided to be silly after all

Ray had experienced numerous deaths in the Vietnam War, possibly metaphorical, and now he takes risks.
So he strapped himself in and he took his chances
Ray secured himself and took a gamble, heading into a challenging situation referred to as the "valley of the bird."
Into the valley of the bird, absurd
Entering a place of uncertainty or danger, described as absurd.
I don't remember what it was the old man said
The speaker cannot recall the advice or words of an old man.
I know I' d tempted fate a 1000 times before
The speaker acknowledges tempting fate many times before and taking risks.
So we strapped ourselves in and we took such chances
Similar to Ray, the speaker and others take chances in the same risky venture.
And had a flight for the brother who can't be
Reference to a flight dedicated to a brother who is absent or cannot be present.

Exploring a wasteland with the goal of achieving a personal objective.

A collective decision to act together, emphasizing unity.
And when I do, I really want to go in style
Expressing a desire to face death stylishly when it comes.
So without a sense of reason we explored
Exploring without a clear purpose or rationale.
Like throwing stones into the great unknown
Comparing exploration to throwing stones into the vast unknown.
