Lyrics

I bought the paper yesterday and I saw the obituary

I learned about your death from the newspaper obituary.

And I read of how you died in pain -

The obituary described the pain and suffering of your death.

Well I just couldn't understand it

I couldn't comprehend the circumstances surrounding your death.

If I could of changed that, then Lord knows I'd do it now

If I had the power to change it, I would do so now.

But there is no going back -

Unfortunately, time cannot be reversed, and actions are permanent.

And what's done is done forever

Once something is done, it remains so forever.

But you were always chained and shackled by the dirt -

You were constrained by societal norms and the influence of both small and big towns.

Of every small town institution and every big town flirt

And I think of what you might have been,

Reflecting on what your potential could have been.

a man of such great promise

You had the potential to be a person of great promise.

Oh but, you seem to forget the dream -

Despite your potential, you seemed to forget your dreams.

And the more you saw you hated

You developed a dislike for things the more you experienced them.

But let's not talk of blame, for what is only natural

Avoiding blame for natural tendencies, like a moth drawn to a flame.

Like a moth going to a flame -

Comparing your dangerous passion to a moth's attraction to a flame.

You had a dangerous passion

You possessed a passion that could lead to harm.

But you were always chained and shackled by the dirt -

You were restricted by the influences of both small and big towns.

Of every small town institution and every big town flirt

All the things that you might have been - but who am I to say?

Contemplating the various possibilities of what you could have become.

Still I wonder -

Still, there's a lingering question about your preference for resting in the cold earth.

If it's in the cold earth you prefer to lay -

Wondering if you would choose to stay in the cold earth.

If it's in the cold earth - you prefer to stay

Speculating on whether the cold earth is your preferred resting place.
