Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay

In fields where they lay keeping their sheep
The shepherds were in the fields, tending to their sheep.
On a cold winter's night that was so deep.
This event occurred on a cold and deep winter's night.

The King of Israel, Jesus, is born.
They looked up and saw a star
The shepherds observed a star in the East.
Shining in the East beyond them far
The star was shining brightly, visible from a great distance.
And to the earth it gave great light
The star illuminated the earth, providing significant light.
And so it continued both day and night.

And by the light of that same star
The Wise Men followed the light of the star.
Three Wise men came from country far
Three Wise Men came from a distant country.
To seek for a King was their intent
The Wise Men sought a King and were determined in their quest.
And to follow the star wherever it went.
They followed the star wherever it led them.

This star drew nigh to the northwest
The star approached the northwest.

And there it did both Pause and stay
It paused and stayed over the place where Jesus was.
Right o'er the place where Jesus lay.
Directly over the location of Jesus' birth.

Then entered in those Wise men three
The Wise Men entered and approached Jesus with reverence.
Full reverently upon their knee
They knelt in a gesture of deep respect.
And offered there in His presence
They presented gifts—gold, myrrh, and frankincense—in the presence of Jesus.
Their gold and myrrh and frankincense.
Expressing homage and recognition of Jesus' significance.

Then let us all with one accord
A call for everyone to unite in singing praises to the heavenly Lord.
Sing praises to our heavenly Lord
Praise for the Creator of Heaven and Earth and acknowledgment of the redemption through Jesus' blood.
That hath made Heaven and earth of nought
Recognition of God's creation ex nihilo (out of nothing).
And with his blood mankind has bought.
Highlighting the sacrificial act of Jesus for humanity.
